What and who is an art patron?
pa-tron... [pey-truhn] –noun

1. a person who is a customer, client, or paying guest, esp. a regular one, of a store, hotel, or the like.

2. a person who supports with money, gifts, efforts, or endorsement an artist, writer, museum, cause, charity, institution, special event, or the like: a patron of the arts..

For us artists... an art patron (art collector) is often our life blood... not in the sense that we need patrons to create art... we're going to do that anyway... we need art patrons to help us pay our electric bill, buy our art supplies, and many times.. eat!

Who are art collectors? They encompass a wide variety of people ranging from the sweet old lady next door to corporate CEOs.

If you are an art collector... Thank you! What would the art world be like without you? Our museums and galleries would be empty, artists would lose a platform to grow from, and all our lives would have less meaning. Many times you are the wind beneath our wings and give us the opportunity to share our creations... and eat!

What is an art affiliate?

1.... a branch organization.

2.... Commerce.a. a business concern owned or controlled in whole or in part by another concern.b. a subsidiary.

Simply put... an art affiliate is my partner/promoter... much like the gallery owners who show/sell my work and get a percentage of those sales. In fact... this program started as my way of giving back in appreciation to all those who purchase and talk about my paintings. How I Market My Art...

I sell my paintings through art galleries who represent me and my work. These brick and mortar locations with live people are a valuable asset to any artist however many times they are limited by location.

The majority of my work is self-represented... meaning I work hard to market it through my website, other online venues, art shows, exhibits, etc. Self-represented may not be the best term... after all... most of my work is collected by art patrons who have heard about my work from other art patrons or simply put... word of mouth. I am indebted to these voices and have decided to reward them through this affiliate program.

Here’s how it works...

I post selected paintings of my work on this blog to sell. I maintain a website, numerous other blogs, facebook, etc but the only the paintings shared on this blog (Bernie Rosage Jr. Art Affiliates) qualify for the program. I am constantly producing new works and shuffling paintings from one gallery to the next and I have found organizing my available paintings for sell in this one place is less confusing for me and you.

You sell my art for me and make 20% commission.

Step #1... Sign up as an my Art Affiliate

Step #2... Promote my artwork... How to sell my art...

Place an image of my art on your blog or website. Write a blog post about it if you like or just tell people to email you if they are interested in buying one of my paintings.

Tell people to contact you by email, phone, etc. However you want the buyer to contact you.

Step #3... Here’s how someone buys my art through you...

If you have a committed buyer, let me know via email and I'll send you a PayPal link that you have your buyer go to and purchase a specific piece of my art.

As soon as the payment is cleared at PayPal, you provide me the address of the buyer and I’ll send the art to the buyer.

Step #4... Collect Commission...

You tell me where and how you want your commission sent to you. All payouts will come from PayPal only.

PayPal is a trusted source for financial transactions.

After the 7-day “no questions asked” return policy has expired, your affiliate payout will be sent.

Shipping and Handling...
All paintings will be packaged with the utmost care and include insurance and tracking number. S&H prices are listed next to the price of the painting.

How refunds will work:
If the art is returned during the 7-day “no questions asked” time period, it must be returned in the condition it was in the photograph. Shipping costs on returned art will include insurance and be paid by the buyer. A full refund will be sent out from my PayPal account to the buyer.

What would a trip to Ireland be without Irish stew and a pint? Tami and I had our first Pub Grub and pint in Ireland's oldest pub...The Brazen Head... in Dublin. In my American mindset I think of anything over 100 years to be old... well that bubble was burst as we enjoyed ourselves in the Brazen Head which has been a pub since 1198AD. It has managed to retain the charm and characteristics of it's past and in particular it's patrons, who have included such literaries as James Joyce, Brendan Behan and Jonathan Swift as well as such revolutionaries as Robert Emmet, Wolfe Tone, Daniel O'Connell and Michael Collins. Today the patrons still include some famous faces, including some very famous musicians like Van Morrison, Hothouse Flowers, Mary Black and Garth Brooks... not to mention... two jovial Americans... US... Sláinte!

Side note: Sláinte! (pronounced slawn-cha) Cheers! - literally “health” in Irish.

When we think of Ireland, we think of the Emerald Isle, the shamrock, the "Wearing of the Green" and the 37 other almost proverbial shades of green. The landscape of Ireland is unsurpassed in beauty. The Emerald Isle boasts the fact that one can see “40 shades of green” an expression made famous by our own Johnny Cash. After a trip to Ireland in the early it seems “The man in black” was also enchanted… so much that he recorded an album in 1961. The most enduring of Cash's Irish songs is "Forty Shades of Green", including the confession that "most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town, and most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown".

Built in honor of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral stands adjacent to the famous well where tradition has it Saint Patrick baptized converts on his visit to Dublin. Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, also known as The National Cathedral and Collegiate Church of Saint Patrick, Dublin founded in 1191, is the largest church in Ireland. The present building dates from 1220. This interior view is from the altar looking toward the entrance.

Side note: Saint Patrick (c. 390 – 460) was a Christian missionary, who first brought the Gospel and Christianity to Ireland and is recognized as the patron saint of Ireland .

Immigration has played a major role in Irish history… past and present. The potato famine in the mid 1800’s brought millions to the United States to elude starvation… many have been immigrating ever since to live the “American Dream” . Only within the last several years has Ireland’s economy thrived. I asked a local woman in Killarney, “Why do you treat Americans so good here?”… her response… “Because you opened your borders to us when no one else would … we would have perished.” Made me proud to be an American. Annie Moore (January 1, 1877 - 1923) was the first immigrant to the United States to pass through the Ellis Island facility in New York Harbor. She arrived from County Cork, Ireland aboard the steamship Nevada on January 1, 1892, her fifteenth birthday, She was accompanied by her two brothers to meet their parents who had come to the United States in 1888. As the first person to be processed at the newly opened facility, she was presented with an American $10 gold piece. Annie Moore is honored by bronze statues at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and in Cobh (pronounced Cove), the Irish seaport from which she sailed.

My model of Annie for this painting was the statue of her in the port town of Cobh, where the majority of the Irish immigrants left their home for a new life in Amerikay.

The Long Walk is a street lined with colorful houses located on the banks of the River Corrib where it meets the Galway Bay. Along this street Galway's gentry of old used to go for strolls. People today still stroll the promenade at The Long Walk which is mentioned in Steve Earle’s recent hit song “Galway Girl”… from the movie PS, I Love You.

This painting is my representation and acknowledgment of the Irish in America. While in Ireland I noticed the local folks look just like us… then it dawned on me… they are us. I did some research… there are over 34.5 million U.S. residents who claim Irish ancestry. This number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself (4.1 million). Their contributions are too great to list… they are a part of our history just as we are a part of theirs. At the outbreak of the American Civil War an estimated 170,000 men born in Ireland joined the Union Army, whereas only 40,000 were in the Confederate Army. At the Battle of Fredericksburg they were directly opposed to each other and cheered each others bravery. The title for this painting comes from a song of that period with the same title…

With a pipe in his mouth sat a handsome young blade,

And a song he was singing so gaily,

His name was Pat Murphy of the Irish Brigade

And he sang of the land of Shillelagh.

The day after battle, the dead lay in heaps

Pat Murphy lay bleeding and gory,

With a hole in his breast from some enemy's ball

This scene is set beneath the Irish flag at the Eamonn Doran's Pub in Dublin, Ireland. I saw this young woman outside in the rain and immediately thought of the title for this painting... "Waiting for the Hen Party". The Irish Hen Party (equivalent to our Bachelorette party) seemed to be the order of the day... or night I should say. Tami and I witnessed several groups of young ladies dressed in "Hen Party Garb" partying throughout the pubs of Dublin. What amazed me most was how those young women managed to walk on the cobbled stone streets in high heels... especially after a pint or two… or three!

This painting was inspired by a couple of photos I took while in Ireland in addition to one of my favorite Irish songs. Photo #1 was a Dublin pub sign that read "Guinness and Dublin in the Rare Auld Times"... Photo #2 was actually taken in Galway City of this old salt enjoying a pint of the black stuff outside a Galway pub. I added the harp for it’s significance as Ireland’s official national symbol and the trademark logo of Guinness. The name for the piece comes from one of my favorite Irish folk songs... "Dublin in the Rare Auld Times" which mentions Sean Demsey... thus the title for this painting. This painting is special to me because it was one of the first in the collection and old Sean looked over my shoulder as I worked at my easel on the rest of the series.

Plein air painters from all over the world agreed to meet in various locations all over the globe to plein air paint on September 5, 6, and 7. This special gathering is to help promote the unique art of painting "en plein aire"... a French term that translates... "in open air". This is my first of several paintings that weekend.

I headed out of the house, riding the heels of tropical storm Hanna, eager to plein air paint with of a couple of my artist friends who I was to meet in New Bern, North Carolina. We were taking part in the IPAP (International Plein Air Painters) 6th Annual Worldwide Paint Out. My pards set up in the shade of the trees at historic Christ's Church while I set up across the street (Pollock Street) to paint another view of the clock tower of the New Bern City Hall. This painting, "Bradham's Pharmacy... Birthplace of Pepsi-Cola, New Bern, NC" is set in downtown New Bern, North Carolina and was painted en plein aire as part of the 6th Annual Worldwide Paint Out sponsored by the International Plein Air Painters. It marks the spot that was once a pharmacy where Caleb Bradham invented "Brad's Drink" in 1898 which he later patented as Pepsi-Cola. The historical site is owned by the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company which serves as Pepsi memorabilia store where visitors can purchase a variety of Pepsi products and even belly up to a vintage soda fountain.

This lovely little lane and fountain is another scene that caught my eye at the 6th Annual Worldwide Paint Out. As Mitchell and I converged on the historical town of New Bern to paint en plein aire I found myself visually feasting at every turn. It would be very difficult... nay... I say impossible... to exhaust the paintings that could be made in this quaint southern town. You will see many more works of New Bern from me.

Ask any southerner... "What are gourds best used for?"... nine out of ten will tell you... "birdhouses". Anywhere in the rural south... a family garden is usually lined with a row or two of gourd birdhouses. This scene is so reminiscent of my childhood... in fact this outing was within walking distance of my house.

The small North Carolina coastal town of Swansboro is dubbed "the friendly city by the sea"... and aptly so. It's quaint shops and great eating places make for a must trip if you are ever in eastern North Carolina. One of my favorite structures in the old town is the Olde Brick Store circa 1839. The former warehouse scarred by Civil War mortar shells once held naval stores, thousands of barrels of turpentine and sometimes prisoners.

This painting, on a gessoed panel with painted sides, is easily framed or displayed with a decorative easel.

This is the best known of Dublin's bridges. It was built in 1816 and was the first iron bridge in Ireland. It is a single span structure with cast iron railings and decorative lamps and crosses the River Liffey. It was originally named the Liffey Bridge but is now called the Ha'penny because until 1919 to cross it there was a half-penny charge. As you cross the Ha'penny bridge you enter the Temple Bar district through the Merchant's Arch which can be seen in this painting. The Merchant's Arch is a formal entry point to the area and dates from the days when ships sailed up the River Liffey to dock here and trade with local merchants. The Ha’penny Bridge is to Dublin what the Eifel Tower is to Paris. Tami and I must have crossed this Dublin landmark a hundred times (for FREE) in our three day stay there.

It is not unusual to see various cottages painted in bright cheery colors with flowers galore. It’s the Irish way to brighten up those gloomy rainy days that are so prevalent there. Although it doesn’t rain much as one might think in Ireland (an average of 40 inches annually in the east and 50 inches in the west… we average 50-60 inches in NC) it does rain often. The average number of wet days (days with more than 1mm of rain) ranges from about 150 days a year along the east and south-east coasts, to about 225 days a year in parts of the west.

Side note: The average temperature is around 70 degrees in the summer and 40 degrees in the winter.

A trip to Ireland without rain would be like going to Disney World and never seeing Mickey Mouse. Some people dread rainy days but I have to be honest by saying "I love them"... I enjoy gray rainy days as much as I do bright sunny ones. Give me a day with ominous gray clouds where the sunlight streams through illuminating the landscape making the 40 shades of green POP and I'm in Heaven! Our trip surpassed our expectations and Tami and I got wet on several occasions. The rain didn't slow us up at all and we took to the streets of Dublin, Kilarney, and Galway City like ducks to a pond.

This was our view of Ross Castle as we were enjoying a jaunting car (horse and carriage) ride through the Killarney National Park. It rained on and off that day... you get a sense of those ominous rain clouds rolling in in this painting. Ross Castle sits on the edge of Killarney's lower lake and was built by O'Donoghue Mór in the 15th century. It was the last stronghold in Munster to hold out against Cromwell. It was eventually taken by General Ludlow in 1652.

The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring, given in friendship or worn as a wedding ring. The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside the old walls of the city of Galway. The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown). The expression which was associated with these symbols in the giving of the ring was: "With my hands I give you my heart, and crown it with my love."

The Claddagh ring with its symbolic meaning is known worldwide. Tami and I exchanged Claddagh rings and renewed our wedding vows in celebration of our 20th anniversary in the small village of Claddagh overlooking the Galway Bay… the inspiration for this painting and the reason for our trip to the Emerald Isle.

The medieval city of Kilkenny has an old world charm that is truly enchanting. The architectural treats like this one seemed to lurk down every alley and around every corner. St Mary’s Lane leads up to St Mary’s Cathedral which is described as "of pure Gothic design, built entirely of chiseled limestone and cruciform in shape". The tower which has become a landmark of the city was originally designed for St. Kieran's College, and rises to a height of 186 feet.

Simply put... an art affiliate is my partner/promoter... much like the gallery owners who show/sell my work and get a percentage of those sales. This painting titled "Confederate Canteen" comes out just in time for Confederate Memorial Day which is recognized on May 10th in North Carolina and several other southern states. North Carolina recognizes May 10th as the date because that is the day Stonewall Jackson died... almost all NC troops in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia fought in Stonewall's corps. This replica Confederate drum style canteen was set up in my studio and painted from life. My special tribute to the southern soldier...

This painting, on Belgian Linen on panel, is framed and ready to hang.

This plein air piece was painted in historic New Bern, NC for the 7th annual IPAP Worldwide Paint Out. I painted this view of the Major John Daves House from the backyard of the John Wright Stanly House. The home (circa 1770) is located at 313 George Street and is a fine example of a Georgian coastal cottage. Major John Daves was a Revolutionary war patriot.

This painting was painted en plein aire with the OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) group that I paint with once a month. Sunday was gorgeous... we were just coming off a week long rain (approx 15 inches according to the local weatherman) and the sunshine and mild temps made the day perfect. We painted at the boat access area of Northeast Creek Park in Jacksonville, NC. The water was high due to the previous week of rain but that never hindered us a bit. I simplified the scene by editing man made objects like a gazebo and power lines (check out the video to see) and went for the essence of what drew me to the scene... the light on the reeds contrasted against the dark cedar trees.

What and who is an art patron?

1. a person who is a customer, client, or paying guest, esp. a regular one, of a store, hotel, or the like.

2. a person who supports with money, gifts, efforts, or endorsement an artist, writer, museum, cause, charity, institution, special event, or the like: a patron of the arts..

For us artists... an art patron (art collector) is often our life blood... not in the sense that we need patrons to create art... we're going to do that anyway... we need art patrons to help us pay our electric bill, buy our art supplies, and many times.. eat!

Who are art collectors? They encompass a wide variety of people ranging from the sweet old lady next door to corporate CEOs.

If you are an art collector... Thank you! What would the art world be like without you? Our museums and galleries would be empty, artists would lose a platform to grow from, and all our lives would have less meaning. Many times you are the wind beneath our wings and give us the opportunity to share our creations... and eat!

Growing up in the coastal plains region of North Carolina snow is something I see once a year if I'm lucky. Cotton fields with their white expanse are as close as I get. I set up this small branch of cotton in a "Ball" jar with an old iron in the studio and painted it from life. Why cotton?... It's conflicting textures of roughness and smoothness and the mere fact that most people don't know what cotton looks or grows like were the motivating factors behind this one. I hope you enjoy it... cotton still makes me think of snow.
